AI & Faith at Higher Purpose Church
Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work, communicate, learn, create, and connect. As a church, we believe that means we have a responsibility to engage the conversation—not with fear, but with wisdom, discernment, and faith.
At Higher Purpose Church, our mission has not changed: we exist to make disciples—to become students of God’s Word who apply themselves and help others grow.
The tools we use to accomplish that mission may change. Our commitment to God, to His Word, and to one another does not.

In this conversation, Pastor Lawrence sits down with Dexter Alexander, a member of the Higher Purpose Church family, to talk about what artificial intelligence means for the Church and for our everyday lives.
Together, they explore some important questions:
- Where can AI genuinely enhance the work of the Kingdom—and where should we draw a line?
- If AI can help us work faster and create more efficiently, could we also become less dependent on God?
- How can we use AI in our personal lives without allowing technology to replace the things only God and human relationships can provide?
- What happens when we begin turning to AI for answers, encouragement, or guidance before we turn to God or to one another?
This isn't a conversation about whether AI is simply "good" or "bad."
It's a conversation about how we use it, what we allow it to become, and whether it ultimately helps us live more faithfully.
Our AI Ministry Policy
Technology Changes. Our Mission Doesn't.
Higher Purpose Church believes artificial intelligence is a tool. Like any tool, its impact depends on how it is used.
AI gives us opportunities to extend our reach beyond the walls of our building, make information more accessible, support ministry preparation, strengthen discipleship resources, and steward our resources wisely. Our AI Ministry Policy establishes how we intend to use those opportunities while maintaining the things technology can never replace.
AI can help us reach people.
AI cannot replace relationship.
Our policy establishes several areas where AI may serve the ministry of HPC, including guest assimilation, research and preparation, sermon and teaching resources, discipleship support, and administrative efficiency.
But there are also clear boundaries.
AI will not create our sermons. The interpretation and application of Scripture, the message being preached, and the spiritual conviction behind that message remain the responsibility of the pastor through study, prayer, and communion with God.
AI will not replace prayer or dependence on God.
AI will not replace pastoral care in critical situations. When someone is experiencing crisis, grief, addiction, abuse, marital distress, mental health concerns, or another situation requiring pastoral judgment, AI is designed to connect people with a pastor or qualified professional—not counsel them itself.
AI will not replace human relationships. Every AI interaction at HPC is intended to point people back toward authentic community—Growth Groups, serving teams, mentoring relationships, and pastoral care.
Using AI Wisely
Our responsibility doesn't end with how HPC uses AI.
As followers of Christ, we also have to consider how artificial intelligence is shaping our lives at home, at work, and online.
AI can be incredibly useful. But the same technology that makes information and assistance instantly available can also create new challenges.
Our policy identifies several risks we believe our congregation should understand:
- Emotional dependency — allowing AI to become a substitute for human connection or spiritual guidance.
- Relational damage — developing attachments to AI personas or companions that compete with real relationships.
- Decision-making atrophy — relying so heavily on AI that we stop exercising our own ability to think, reason, discern, and make wise decisions.
- Addiction — allowing technology designed to keep our attention to become compulsive or unhealthy.
The answer isn't to be afraid of technology.
The answer is to use it faithfully and govern it wisely.
A Church That Is Willing to Learn
We believe the Church has a responsibility to help people navigate the world they actually live in.
That means we want to equip our congregation—not only to understand what AI is, but to think critically about how it affects our faith, our relationships, our work, and our ability to hear from God.
We'll continue creating opportunities for teaching, conversation, and practical guidance around questions like:
- What does it mean to depend on God in an age of instant answers?
- How do we maintain authentic relationships when technology offers convenient substitutes?
- How do we steward the God-given capacity to think, discern, and exercise wisdom when machines can increasingly do those things for us?
We don't approach these questions with fear.
God is not threatened by artificial intelligence. He is sovereign over it.
Our responsibility is to use it faithfully, govern it wisely, and make sure it serves the mission God has given us.
